Say “Hello” to our New Neighbor!
Hi. My name is Linda Johnson. I was= born and raised here on the West Side of Saint Paul. I am a widow of a wonderful= man who died in 1998 from the war of Viet-Nam. I have two wonderful children who are in their early twenties and a beautiful granddaughter who will be four = this May. I have worked in schools for 10 years as a Custodian-Lunch Lady. I had= a very busy hobby farm in Wisconsin from 1993 until my husband passed away. We had cows, chickens, dogs and cats. Now I’m ready to calm down at Coun= try Club Manor. I am still working at an Academy School, looking forward to mee= ting all of you. God Bless…. Linda
CCM adds 12 Units for Purple
Martins

CCM, in cooperation with Southiew Count=

attracting a colony of purple martins.&nbs=

Martins are delightful birds, about 50% larger than any other MN swa=
llow. Their best attribute is that they =
eat
about half their weight in flying insects each day. The trouble is, they are forced to
compete with other birds for nesting space. If we are ever going to get them, =
we
will need to keep a watch for the “bad birds,” mainly sparrows =
and
starlings. If they get their =
nests
built first, they will keep martins from building theirs.

You can help us increase our chances of getting matins= to nest by checking the house from time to time and if you see any of the “bad birds” (pictured above) entering, let George know. If you = get close enough, you will see the apartments are numbered. That’s so you can tell us wh= ich “unit” the bird is going into. We would also like to know if any martins are nesting there. A “nest check” on May 28 showed partial nests in many of the units but a completed nest in 403/404, which is on the 4th floor facing the tee. (Some of the units are combined into one with the right side entra= nce hole plugged.) So if you̵= 7;re out for a walk on a nice day, we urge you to walk by the house and let us k= now what you see.

A Message from Mary
Happy Father’s Day (June 15) to all our Fathers = here at CCM. I trust you will all = have a very beautiful day enjoying as many of your children as are available. Let’s hope the weather co op= erates and we begin to have some warm weather also.
I am happy so many signed up for the Treasure Island
Cruise. Have a great time, en=
joy
the ride down the river and Good Luck at
FLASH!
Although we are “sold out” of our 2+den, 3= BR, and suites, we will have a 1BR and 2BR coming up in the next couple months.= We would rather rent to YOUR frien= d or relative than a stranger. So for June and July only, you will receive $400 CASH to do what with you please, as a token of our appreciation for a referral. To repeat, that̵= 7;s four one hundred dollar bills!
Remember, keep the date of Wednesday July 2, open for = our annual summer BBQ. Again, I will be supplying the ham= burgers, brats, turkey burgers, beverages and buns for the event. All you will have to remember is a= side dish or a bag of chips to add to the picnic. Hope to see all of you there on Wednesday. Remember we start about 5:30 and go until we drop. Food will be served until just aft= er 7:00 or until the food is gone. If= the sky is clear maybe Lee will bring his telescope and we can look at the stars just after the beer and wine are gone.
In the mean time I hope to see you around the building= when I am there.
Till next month God Bless and have a great one, Mary

We have 5 signed up for the August 6th trip= . Lee is building new carts for the residents to use for groceries. If you use one give us some feedback on the cart. We would like to return the carts from Target and Rainbow. Early part of June, Minnesota Exteriors will be doing a major repair in the 1955 building and the building for the Club Room and Po= ol. They will be removing the black mansard roofing on the side of the buildings and doing new brown mansard roofing. The project is to last about 4-5 weeks, but again, depending on the weather. There will be man lifts and other equipment around the buildings. So please use precaution when outside. Some= of you have seen the signup sheet on getting your windows cleaned. This gentle= man, with his wife, do this for a living. He has given
us very = r golf easonable prices. I hope everyone has seen the sheet= . If you can’t be home, maybe make arrangements with

unlocked up on the west end of the 1955 building up by the park. When going
through gate or coming back, always lock it both ways. Remember now, we have
our summer picnic on Wednesday, July 2nd from 5:30 until wheneve=

Bring a dish to pass if you like, but all the hamburgers, turkey burgers, h=

As many of you know, Country Club Manor=
will
be sponsoring a Treasure Island Cruise on June 4th hosted by Riv=
er
Heights Yacht Charters. We ha=
ve 17
people going and reservations are now closed. River Heights Yacht Charters is of=
fering
another trip on August 6th, so if you have a good time, or missed
your chance to sign up, maybe we will host another trip. The cost is only
$31.90 per person and that includes the cruise and a lunch on board the mega
yacht. The Yacht is handicap
assessable, so if you need a wheel chair they can accommodate you. Both the June and August dates are
Senior days and they treat you even better on those days.
They depart at 9am. The scenic cruise takes 4 hours. <= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> It holds 145 people. Once there, yo= u can try your luck at gambling (or just people watch) for 4 hours after which, y= ou will be bused backed to where you left your car.
If you prefer not to spend time at the casino, you are welcome to ride the boat back, but be prepared to take much longer than 4 h= ours to get back.

At least 95% of lightning d= eaths occur outdoors. If you see lightning, get inside your home or a large building immediately.
You ask: Is it dangerous to talk on a phone during a thunderstorm?
Corded phones are extremely dangerous during a storm. Home phone lines are protected with surge devices, but these defenses can be overwhelmed should lightning hit a nearby power pole. Someone dies every few years while talking on a phone during a lightning strike.
Caution: Homes in isolated areas are more vulnerable because they don’t share power poles with as many neighbors. In areas with mult= iple homes, the electricity is more likely to be “diluted” because it splits in different directions.
Portable (cordless) and cel= l phones are safe to use during a thunderstorm.
Should I unplug my computer=

Every year, the insurance i= ndustry pays out about a third of a million dollars in claims for losses due to lightning. Many of these loss= es involve electronics that are blown out by power surges.
It’s a good idea to p= rotect electronic equipment, such as stereos, TV’s, computers, and etc. with surge protectors. Good qualit= y ones typically cost between $50 and $100. Like the surge protection built into houses, however, they don’= ;t offer 100% protection. Unplug= ging devices before a storm is the best approach.
Remember in case of a power outage, emergency lights a= re only designed to stay lite for one hour on battery. Find your flashlights within that = time and keep them handy. In the s= torm we had over memorial day weekend we were without power for 12 hours, so ple= ase do not depend on the emergency lights for more than one hour after the elec= tric goes out. If you are on oxyge= n and need power, please go to a hospital that has emergency generators for when = the power goes out.
