REMINDERS:

GARAGE STALL RENTAL:

Some residents prefer to rent their garages in the winter and let them go in the summer.  This forces us to rent them to non-residents in the summer and then evict them come fall to make room for our own "snowbirds."  Not only is this not fair to the non-residents, we feel it detracts from the building’s security with non-residents having the "right" to wander around in the UG area and thus have access to the buildings.  Hence, we ask that you sign a garage lease that coincides in term with your apartment lease. If you still wish to give up your garage stall, you must give a thirty day written notice.  And, of course, you will not be guaranteed a garage for next winter.  Remember what it’s like getting into a car that has been sitting in the sun!  Please consider keeping your garage for the summer!  If you have any questions, please see Stacey.

MAINTENANCE:

Any maintenance emergency can be reported after hours by calling our digital pager at 612-640-1948.  (Just punch in your number after the beep.)

If you have any maintenance needs, please leave a note for us.   (Maintenance requests should always be in writing.  This helps assure it doesn’t "fall through the cracks.")

Controlled Entrance: When your apartment is buzzed, please use the intercom to make certain it’s someone you know before buzzing in a stranger.  Do not let anyone into the building after hours that are asking for the office.  Please do not let anyone in the door that is not YOUR guest.  Safety should be everyone’s concern.

Going Away?  Please notify the office if you plan to be gone for an extended period.  If there is an emergency, we must have a contact person.

THANK YOU!

Thanks to everyone for your cooperation while we work on the balconies and other summer projects.  Sorry for any inconvenience.

WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS:

#132 Terry & Eugene Skrukrud

#134 Lucy Halterman

#320 Renee Norman

And . . .

PRODIGAL SON & DAUGHTERS RETURN!

Text Box: Rembrandt We would like to extend a special welcome to SueAnn Gabrielson (#106) who joined our little community on May 1.  SueAnn resided at Country Club Manor until November 2001 at which time she left us!  Oh nooooo!  She moved into a townhouse and lived there until memories of the good life at Country Club Manor were just too much for her and so she returned like the proverbial Prodigal Son, er, daughter.  SueAnn explained, "I returned because of the exceptional staff especially Stacey."  (Congratulations Stacey!) She also cited the safe feeling she has always had as a resident at Country Club Manor and appreciated that the complex was a "55 and older" community.  She added that her son just hates it where he lives at a nearby non-senior project.  Whatever the reasons, welcome home, Ann!

We would also like to extend a equally hearty WELCOME BACK to G. Donald & Eleanor Waldhauser (#129)who left our little community just last summer.  They thought they’d be happier in their own townhome at Presbyterian Homes in Inver Grove Heights . . . but they weren’t.  Citing poor construction, small closets and more, they too were drawn back to Country Club Manor.  Welcome home Don and Eleanor!

NEW POOL PROGRAM ANNOUNCED

L&M Management, Inc. (LMI) is delighted to announce a new pool aerobics program.  Robin Feickert, the Aquatics Director from a local community center, will be leading the exercises at 11:00 a.m. every Saturday morning beginning June 19.  Here’s your chance to get that much needed exercise, lose a pound or two, all while visiting/commiserating with your neighbors.  There will be a sign up sheet in the office.  This will be open to residents and their guests (subject to class size).

Southview Country Club Social Memberships Available, Free to Country Club Manor Residents!

Southview Country Club Social Memberships Available, Free to Country Club Manor Residents!

Southview Country Club Social Memberships Available, Free to Country Club Manor Residents!

Our new owners, Lee and Mary Bakewell, have worked out a special deal with Southview Country Club with regards to social memberships.  Whereas most "social memberships" at country clubs require an annual dues AND monthly minimums, Country Club Manor residents are now able to become full fledged social members of SVCC by merely filling out a Country Club Manor-endorsed application and having it approved by SVCC.  Upon approval, you will be able to enjoy all benefits of dining in their suburb dining rooms and bars.  We especially like their exquisite buffets on Wednesdays and fine holiday dining.

CAR STOLEN!

On May 21, 2004, Country Club Manor’s Resident Manager, Stacey Hansen, discovered her car was STOLEN out of the UG parking area!  Later reports indicated this occurred AFTER 7:30 in the morning.  This the first time in seven years, as far as we know, that any such thing has happened at CCM.  Then, two days later, a stereo was stolen from another car in the 1945 building!  Stacey’s car was later found abandoned by a Dakota County Sheriff and returned to her but not until after it had been basically trashed by vandals.

LMI did not take these incidents lightly despite their infrequency.  As you may recall, the garage door opener codes were all changed the next day.  In addition, all of the main door keys are being re-cut.  These steps were taken in case entry was gained via a misplaced opener or unauthorized duplication of a key.  But what if this crime was perpetrated by an outside criminal or neighborhood kid?  To thwart any such future attempts, we are obtaining bids for a E-W 6’ high chain link fence along the N property line.

Most importantly, our antiquated security camera system is being replaced with a modern, high res, low lux comprehensive network of 12 cameras.  These cameras will feed into a state-of-the art "DVR" or Digital Video Recorder.  Perhaps this incident was an inexpensive “wake up call.”

Of course none of this will do any good if any of us forget the basics:

  • Don’t “buzz” anyone in without knowing for sure who they are.
  • Make sure the main doors have closed and latched before leaving the vestibule area.
  • Stop your car for a few seconds after passing through the garage door to assure no unauthorized person or vehicle comes through “on your dime.”

MAJOR REPAIR AND IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS FOR THE SUMMER OF 2004

Getting tired of paying rent without seeing any of the money going back into the buildings?  LMI is committed to providing the highest quality living for the most affordable rent.

You probably have noticed the major (and long overdue) work done on the pool this winter.  The following are projects we are planning for this summer:

  • Sand, prime, and paint all the balcony railings
  • Replace all rotted wood members at the base of the balconies and recover with attractive maintenance-free siding
  • Install an extensive security system throughout both buildings and common areas
  • Install a new east-west security fence along the north property line to insulate us from the “family” complexes to the north
  • Install twin flag poles at the entrance off Oakdale
  • Sod the areas just west of the entryway signs at the Oakdale curb-cut and plant flower beds on either side of the signs
  • Install a big-screen TV in the party room, equipped with cable
  • Repair the “aggregate” areas of the steps leading to the entrances of both buildings
  • Replace the “leakers,” pool room glass panes that appear streaked and dirty and somewhat impair our beautiful view of SVCC

Hopefully, we have not bitten off more than we can chew but at least you will know we are trying.  Please bear with us while we make Country Club Manor a better place to live.  While it may be true Country Club Manor is NOT a perfect place to live, just remember . . . we’re not through yet!

LISA’S WORLD

Hope all of you Country Club Manor mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day.  I had a wonderful day with Dave and the girls.  We took a drive up north, had lunch and did some shopping.

I’m sure you all have been enjoying the lovely weather we’ve had.  I’ve been walking in the evening and have noticed all the fragrant trees in bloom right now.

Have any of you taken advantage of the grills outside?  It sure has been perfect weather for grilling up some burgers and brats!

Happy Father’s Day to all the Country Club Manor fathers.

You Can Choose Your Own Neighbors!

Stacey presents Carol and Don Standley with two “$100 Certificates of Appreciation.”

Don Standley is a member of the Moose Lodge in Maplewood.  A fellow Lodge member, Jim Mehle mentioned he and Kathy were selling their home so they could move into a nice apartment somewhere.  Jim asked Don what he thought of Pearlwood Estates in Inver Grove Heights.  Don had to say he couldn’t recommend them and Don was in a position to know because he and Carol lived there before moving to Country Club Manor just last winter.  Don was forced to say that Pearlwood looked beautiful to them before they moved in but afterwards, it became clear they did not screen their new residents very well.  It seemed to Don they were "letting riff-raff in," possibly because of the abundance of apartments on today’s market.  So Don said, "Why don’t you take a look at Country Club Manor?  We love it there."  Sure enough, they did come by, talked to Stacey, and now reside in 316 as Don and Carol’s neighbors!  Even without the certificates of appreciation, Don and Carol liked the idea of being able to "choose their own neighbors."  So did Jim and Kathy.  And so did Stacey, Lee, Mary, and Lisa which makes it truly a "win-win-win" situation!

But the Standleys aren’t the only ones “winning” through referrals.  Sylvia and Tina in 303 referred the next resident of 208 as did Alice Stuart from 234 when she chose Terry Skrukrud, who just moved into 132, as her neighbor.

Choosing your own neighbors is easy to do.  Just give Stacey the name and number of someone you think might be looking for a nice apartment or give your friend Stacey’s number.  In the latter case, please make sure they mention your name early in the conversation.

GARDEN OF DAILY LIVING

The Garden

Come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses...

For the Garden of Daily Living, plant three rows of Peas:

Peace of mind

Peace of heart

Peace of soul

Plant four rows of Squash:

Squash gossip

Squash indifference

Squash grumbling

Squash selfishness

Plant four rows of Lettuce:

Lettuce be faithful

Lettuce be kind

Lettuce be patient

Lettuce really love one another

No Garden is without Turnips:

Turnip for meetings

Turnip for service

Turnip to help one another

To conclude our Garden we must have Thyme:

Thyme for each other

Thyme for family

Thyme for friends

Water freely with patience and cultivate with love.  There is much fruit in your Garden because you reap what you sow.

ON-YOUR-HONOR PARTY ROOM

As you know, the party room has been kept locked in the past and you had to first get the key from Stacey if you wanted to use it for one reason or another.  But it has been suggested that, due to this inconvenience, residents haven’t been getting the use out of it they otherwise would.  Hence, we will be leaving the doors open from this point on.  We only ask that you leave it as clean as you found it, or cleaner, and turn off the lights when you are finished.  Of course, you may still reserve it for special events.

FATIGUE:
Hints for a High Energy Life

Be honest.  When you first heard the words “energy crisis,” did you think of Arab oil embargoes or yourself?

If you thought of yourself - struggling to start your inner engine in the morning, desperate to keep it humming after lunch in the afternoon, and only too willing to let it sputter to a stop in the evening - you are not alone.

Everyone, at one time or another, feels fatigued.  And who wouldn’t like to have more energy than they now have?

Unfortunately, having more energy is a lot like having more money - it’s easier to talk about it than to get it.  Yet it’s also easier to increase your energy than you probably realize.  Of course, the broad prescription from doctors is still the same:  Get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet, and exercise.  But here physicians and other authorities on fatigue go beyond these generalities and offer more specific, high-octane suggestions.  So, ladies and gentlemen, please start your engines.

WARM UP.  Give yourself an extra 15 minutes in the morning before you start your day.  This way you don’t start off feeling rushed and tired.

EAT A THREE-PIECE BREAKFAST.  The three components of a good breakfast are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.  Of course, you don’t want to add fat to your breakfast table.  You will get plenty of fats, a good form of storable energy, in the proteins you eat.

But even cereal with milk can get your day off to a good start.  Wheat toast and muffins are also good complex carbohydrate options.  For protein, you might want to consider low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese.

KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING.  If you don’t, you will probably be too tired to get there.  Take time each morning to set specific goals for the day.  Determine what you want to do; don’t let the routine control you.

ARREST THE ENERGY ROBBERS.  If it’s a problem on the job, or if it’s a family feud, you’ve got to resolve it.  But if you can’t resolve your problem, at least take a vacation from the situation.

TURN OFF TO TURN ON.  Television is famous - make that infamous - for lulling human beings into lethargy.  Try reading instead.

WORK OUT TO REV UP.  Exercise actually gives you energy.  Study after study supports those words.  Doctors recommend giving yourself a dose of energetic exercise - brisk walking is enough - three to five times a week for 20 to 30 minutes each time and no later than two hours before bedtime.  Aerobics in the pool is even better!  And you are not as likely to be hit by a car!

TACKLE ONE THING AT A TIME.  Make lists.  Many times, people feel fatigued because they think they have so much to do and they don’t know where to start.  By setting priorities and charting your progress as you make your way through the list, you can remain focused and energetic.

TAKE ONE A DAY.  If you are guilty of missing meals, dieting, or not eating properly, taking one multivitamin and mineral supplement a day is a good idea.  A lack of good nutrition can cause fatigue, and a supplement can help make up for the missing nutrients.

PUT OUT THE FIRE.  Doctors always advise giving up smoking, but add this to the list of reasons:  Smoking adversely affects the delivery of oxygen to tissues.  The result is fatigue.  When you first quit, however, don’t expect an immediate energy boost.  Nicotine acts as a stimulant, and withdrawal may cause some temporary tiredness.

GET FEWER ZZZZZZs.  You can get too much of a good thing, even sleep.  If you oversleep, you tend to be groggy all day.  Usually 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night is enough for most people.

GET 20 WINKS.  Naps aren’t for everybody, but they might help recharge older people who aren’t sleeping as soundly as they used to.  Younger people with very hectic schedules and short nights also might consider taking naps.  If you do decide to take naps, try to take them at the same time each day and for no more than an hour.  The length and frequency of your naps is a measure of your wealth!

DRINK UP.  Not booze but water.  The day before you’re going to be out in the hot sun and physically active, doctors advise that you drink plenty of water and continue to do so on the day of the activity.  This will guard against dehydration, which in turn can cause fatigue.
