Edited by Lee & Mary Bakewell
Ellen Rongitsch (#324) had been living at Carousel
Apartments (1335 Oakdale). On=
e day,
she mentioned to Yvonne, the long time manager of Carousel, that she wanted=
to
move because she wanted something nicer.&n=
bsp;
Rather than just letting her go apartment shopping, Yvonne referred =
her
to Country Club Manor. Yvonne had seen how nice it is here while she was
attending a R.O.M.A. meeting hosted by Country Club Manor some time ago.
It’s kind of nice to know even other apartment managers
appreciate what we have here! Carousel
is a very nice building with UG parking, elevator, and even a pool (albeit
outdoors so probably not too useful these past couple of weeks.) Carousel is NOT a seniors-only SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT
building=
so if
you know someone looking for an apartment who isn’t at least 55, they
could reach Yvonne at 457-0041. She
has a 1BR and a 3BR available right now.
Choosing your own neighbors is easy! Just give George the name and numb=
er of
someone you think might be looking for a nice apartment. That’s all there is to it. Or you can give the office number
(451-2633) to your friend. Wh=
en
your friend joins our little community, you will receive two $100 certifica=
tes
of appreciation to use towards your rent.

St. Paul’s Winter = Carnival “King Boreas Rex” and his Senior Royal Court visited the Southv= iew Senior Living Center (1984 Oakdale, practically across the street from us) = on January 11, 2008. The celebra= tion went on, as usual for about an hour. The King had one last Royal Announcement. Calling Mayann Knoll (#306) to the center podium, the King and his Court bestowed the honor of “Royal Knight” upon Maryann presenting her with a beautiful bouquet and a Wi= nter Carnival Royal Family Certificate. The big surprise was that the residents themselves had nominated Maryann--who has been employed there for some time--prior to the King’= ;s visit, and they were all able to keep it a secret! Maryann was shocked they actually = pulled it off without a peep!

The honor recognizes citizens of our
community for their outstanding and faithful services. May we all have the love and patie=
nce to
serve others as the need arises, as CCM’s very own Maryanne clearly d=
oes!&nb=

Congratulations Maryann!
REMINDERS:
MAINTENANCE:
Any maintenance emergency can be reported after hours by calling our digital pager at 612-640-1948. (Just punch in your number after the beep.)
If you have any maintenance needs, please leave a note for us.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> (Maintenance requests should always be in writing. This he= lps assure they don’t “fall through the cracks.)
Controlled entrance: When your apartment is buzzed, please use = the intercom to make certain it’s someone you know before buzzing in a stranger. Do not let anyone i= nto the building after hours that are asking for the office. Please do not let anyone in the do= or that is not YOUR guest. Safety should be everyone’s concern.
Ice is slippery: = We live in Minnesota and it can get very slippery outside in the winter. Please be very careful when you wa= lk in the winter. It can be slippery anywhere and anyplace, on the steps, in the parking lot and even in the dri= ve way. We try to put salt and s= and down to clear the ice, but when it warms up and then the temperature drops every evening it is very hard to keep up.&= nbsp; Please be careful, especially when we get a light dusting of snow, a= s it can be slippery also.
Visitors: We would also like to remind everyone that you are re= sponsible for your visitors and their actions. Please be sure your visitors are not disturbing other residents̵= 7; right to peace and quiet. We = want to continue to maintain a quiet and pleasant building. .
Going Away? Please notify the office if you plan to be gone for an extended period. If there is an emergency, we must = have a contact person.
Snow Removal: Ple= ase make sure your vehicles are moved for the snow plow. Unmoved vehicles, unfortunately, a= re often towed at owner’s expense. Thanks for your cooperation.
Trash: Please remember to bag you garbage, before dropping down= the chute. If your bag is TOO LAR= GE to go down the chute, please take it down and deposit it directly in the garba= ge dumpster in the garage.
Pool: Please, NO = swimming in the pool during the hour long aerobics classes on Monday at 1 PM or Satu= rday at 10 AM. Those times are res= erved for aerobics only. But you co= uld join the class if you like!
A MESSAGE FROM MARY
Happy Valentine’s Day to every one! Kevin & Kathy and Don & Ca= rol will be hosting a Valentine’s brunch on Saturday February 16th at 11:30 AM. You are invited to come and bring = a dish to share. We have great cooks= at CCM so be sure to pass up breakfast that morning. Keep in mind there will be NO Coff= ee and Donuts that morning. Thanks to Kevin, Kathy, Don and Carol for all your help.
I hear the New Year’s Eve party was a great succ= ess and that Dee was the hit of the party with her keyboard and her tunes. Maybe she will entertain us again = for St. Patty’s day next month? = span>I hear her “fee” is a bottle of nice wine.
Thanks everyone for your co operation with unit inspec= tions this past month. I am sorry w= e had to spring them on you at the last minute.&= nbsp; I received a call from the Fire Department telling me that even thou= gh we had checked and installed all the new smoke detectors just recently, they still wanted all of them tested in the month of January and a report sent i= n to them by the end of the month. Thanks George and Dan for taking care of this for me. With year end reports, CRP’s= and fitting in a small break to Disney World with the grandsons, I just did not have enough time in a day to do it myself.= Sorry I missed you, but I will be around the building again soon.
George and Dan probably delivered your CRP’s whe= n they checked your smoke detectors and replaced your filters. Please place them in a safe place = or file right away. I know the S= tate does not send out the refunds until August, but you can send it in now and still get the refund in August. Because of the amount of work involved with each CRP on our part, if= you misplace it and request a duplicate later in the year we will need to charg= e a $25 duplication fee.
As you know we have had a problem with the front steps=
. We wanted to totally replace them =
but we
also wanted something commensurate with the quality and prestige of Country
Club Manor. Then we learned t=
hat
the entryway foyers have floors made of “New York Bluestone.” This is a very special and durable
material quarried in—you guessed it—New York. So our plans are to pull up all the
pebble stone, repair any damaged concrete below, and then pave the steps wi=
th
bluestone. The contractor cla=
ims he
can get each set of steps done in a week.&=
nbsp;
How can this be done when it’s so cold outside? The workmen will build shelters an=
d heat
them with propane. Plus they will use “electric blankets.” When we learned it was possible, we
thought winter would be a better time because there is less traffic . . . a=
nd
George thought there would be less snow to shovel! Anyway, watch for the barricades a=
nd
thanks for putting up with the inconvenience.
Till next month God Bless, Mary
A NOTE FROM GEORGE
I hope everyone had a great time bringing in the New Y= ear. As you know we missed the party here at the club room. I heard the party had a great turn out and everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to Dee Weimer, you= had excellent entertainment as well. We went to one of our daughters’ home and brought the New Year in there. I even made it to midnight.
The brunch on January 19 had a great turn out. The var=
iety
of dishes, breads, and desserts made for a wonderful meal. We will be having another brunch on
February 16th at 11:30 am. It will be called a Valentine’s Brunch. =

The different food everyone brings to s=
hare
is what makes it a great brunch. Everyone is welcome to participate in this
event, as well as the Potlucks, which are the last Mondays in the month.
Super Bowl Sunday, is February 3rd, and there will be a party in the Club Room, starting at 5:30 p.m. Bring a snack to share and ha= ve a great time rooting for your favorite team.= It is always more fun to watch a game with friends and good food.
Remember that the brunches, potlucks, Super Bowl Party= , New Year’s Eve party, Halloween party, Saturday morning coffees, and I kn= ow there are more, are all hosted and organized by Kevin & Kathy Ericson (= many times with help from Don & Carol,) so let’s all give them a big T= HANK YOU.

The “puzzle ladies” (led by Shirley #219 a= nd Bernice #213) started a mammoth puzzle this week. 5000 pieces which, when completed, will be 40x60 inches in size. This will help pass some of the co= ld days ahead, although it may have warmed up a lot . . . by the time it is do= ne! Stop by and take a look. If you can actually find a piece, you’ll probably get your name in the paper . . . or at least this Newsletter! So far, Bernice, Shirley, Lois, Myrna, Phyliss, Marlene, Madge,= and even Lee have all been seen working on it, to name just five. I know it’s the largest puzz= le I’ve ever seen. Good Luck.
Thank you everyone for doing your EMERGENCY FACT SHEET= and turning them in. I am only missing 2 now.&= nbsp; It is comforting to know that I now have the correct information on everyone in case of an emergency.
Unit inspections went very well. Thanks everyone for letting us dis= turb your home once more. The W. S= t. Paul Fire Dept. is very happy that we were able to fit it in and get the sm= oke detectors done and the report sent in on time last month.
George

Best of all, like most activities at Country Club Manor, it’s =
all totally FREE!
Please join us for CCM Aerobics held every Saturday mo= rning at 10:00 AM, and Monday afternoons at 1:00 PM as well! The only cost is that if you DON= 8217;T attend, your good health will suffer! So please come on down and visit your neighbor while losing a pound = or two! Everyone is welcome.
Ø Every Day of the Week is Puzzle Day
If you’ve ever passed by the area between the ea= st Club Room door and the entrance to the 45 building, you no doubt have witne= ssed our “perpetual puzzle.” Wouldn’t you like to tell your grandchildren you once worked o= n a 5,000 piece puzzle?

This is a great way= to get to know your neighbors. Y= ou do not need to commit to every Saturday. If you can make it this Saturday, but have to miss the next three, that’s no problem. This= is not like a golf or bowling league where you must attend every week . . . or= not at all! Please stop by when y= ou get a chance and join in the fun.
Ø POT= LUCK/Birthday Party:
February’s potluck/birthday party will be held on
Monday, February 25 in the Club Room starting at 5:30. I hope to see you there.
For the funny bone
A group of young schoolch= ildren took a field trip to their local police station, where they saw pictures of= the ten most wanted criminals tacked to a bulletin board. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person.
<= /span>“Yes,” the policeman replied. “= ;The detectives want very badly to capture him.”
<= /span>The youngster then asked, “Why didn’t you just lock him up after you took his picture?”
A young executive was lea= ving the office late one evening when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredd= er with a piece of paper in his hand.
The CEO said to the young man, “This is a very sensitive and important document here, and my assistant has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?”
“Certainly,” = said the young executive. He turned the machine on inserted the paper and pressed the start button.
“Excellent!” exclaimed the CEO as his paper disappeared into the machine. “I just need one copy.”= ;
Several women went out to= lunch to celebrate the birthday of their oldest friend. When the waitress came to take the= ir order, one of the women said to her, “This is a very special occasion= . It’s Elsie’s ninety-se= cond birthday.”
The waitress made several= instant enemies and one fast friend when she asked, “Which one of you is Elsie?”
Postal Truck
Every Wednesday from 11:05 = AM until 11:15 AM a postal truck is in front of the 45 building to handle all your postal requests.
Darts
On the Second Wednesday of = the month, Kathy Pansegrau from Darts is in the office from 1 to 3:30 PM. If you have any questions or needs= that Darts can handle please stop in and visit with Kathy.
