Happy 4th of July to everyone. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday. Please remember all the servicemen who defend our country and protect our freedom in your prayers.
I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the July BBQ coming up on July 8th. Don’t forget to sign up so we have an idea of how many will attend.
I really enjoyed potluck last Sunday. My prior engagement was cancelled so I was able to join you.
I would like to ask for your patience and cooperation during the remodeling and decorating work we are getting done this summer. As many of you have seen, the party room is torn apartment and we are working as fast as we can to get things updated and put back together. I’m sure you’ll be happy with the end result.
Have you have noticed some updating in the common areas of both buildings? I hope you like it so far. We are still working on the common areas and there will be many more updates to come.
Thanks for all the compliments on the landscaping and flagpoles at the entry to the building. Glad you like them!!
We are thinking of having a CCM garage sale August 26th & 27th. In order to do so, we would need some volunteers from the building. Of course, this would be an opportunity to earn a little money and get rid of those items you don’t need any longer. If you are interested, please let Stacey know or call L & M, so we have an idea of how many people would be interested and can help out. We will notify you of the final arrangements in the August newsletter.
REMINDER:
I would like to remind all residents to register your vehicle with Stacey in the office so that we have record of all CCM resident vehicles in the lot and garage. Please remember to give us the information if you sell or buy a vehicle. This is the only way that we can keep tabs and know that the vehicles in the lot belong to our residents.
I’m continuing to enjoy my grandson and he is getting bigger and bigger every day. It is amazing how much his personality is changing every week. He is even sitting up on his own already. Can’t believe how fast he’s growing. I’m looking forward to seeing his reaction when my daughter takes him in the pool for the first time. I bet he will be a little fish by the time he’s two!
Til next month, God Bless,
Mary
I hope all of the fathers at Country Club Manor had a Happy Father’s Day and were able to enjoy a family day. My girls made some cute cards for Dave and treated him to a much needed, relaxing massage. I think he’s looking forward to Abby becoming a massage therapist and having his own personal masseuse in the house!!
St. Paul College summer program is going well for Abby. She is also working part time for Lee and Mary. In fact, some of you may have met her already at Country Club Manor. She is cleaning turnovers and helping with the balcony work.
Lindsey is in summer school and is taking her freshman phy-ed and health classes for two weeks. This will free up her schedule for a study hall in the fall. She is enjoying her summer but can’t wait for the hot weather so she can enjoy our pool.
Dave and I have been frantically working on getting prepared for Abby’s graduation party on July 10th. Can’t believe how much work it has been. Of course, it is a great motivator to get household and yard projects done!
Looking forward to meeting more of you at the July picnic.
Have a great month!
Lisa

GARAGE STALL RENTAL:
Last month’s article about garage rentals was taken by some to mean if residents of Country Club Manor did not rent all the UG garage stalls, we would rent them out to non-resident “riffraff.” Of course, that is not the case. First, any non-resident renting a garage would be screened just as thoroughly as we would screen a prospective new resident. But secondly, it seems we do not have a significant quantity of garage stalls so as to necessitate renting some to non-residents.
MAINTENANCE:
Any maintenance emergency can be reported after hours by calling our digital pager at 612-640-1948. (Just punch in your number after the beep.)
If you have any maintenance needs, please fill out a maintenance request slip. (Maintenance requests can be found outside the office door. Written requests help assure repairs don’t “fall through the cracks.”)
Going Away? Please notify the office if you plan to be gone for an extended period. If there is an emergency, we must have a contact person.
Thanks to everyone for your cooperation while we work on the balconies and other summer projects. We are finally getting some good working weather so we hope to get a lot accomplished this month. Sorry for any inconvenience.

As reported last month, Southview Country Club Social Memberships are available free to our residents. However, it should have been pointed out this is only an introductory offer for the first year. Of course, if you have been a member for some time or if your first year is coming to a close, SCC’s normal rules will apply. That is, there will be dues of $75/year and a minimum of $150 to be spent in the dining room each year (or just $12.50/mo). Get your application from the office. Where the form asks for a “sponsor,” just put “CCM.” Upon approval, you will be able to enjoy all benefits of dining in their suburb dining rooms and bars. We especially like their exquisite buffets on Wednesdays and fine holiday dining.
Getting tired of paying rent without seeing any of the money going back into the buildings? LMI is committed to providing the highest quality living for the most affordable rent.
You probably have noticed the major (and long overdue) work done on the pool this winter. The following are projects we are planning for this summer:
Please bear with us while we make Country Club Manor a better place to live. While it may be true Country Club Manor is NOT a perfect place to live, just remember . . . we’re not through yet!
Some residents have jumped to the conclusion these costly improvements will lead to a rent raise. Not true! LMI has absolutely no plans for a rent raise in the foreseeable future and you can take that to the bank! In fact, with rents staying at their same level, taken together with all these improvements, it could be said the “effective rent” is going down!
Many of our residents already know about the nice “hidden” City Park just west of our buildings. It is so well concealed and, not abutting a busy street, is so little known that it’s like our own private park! However, it’s fenced in. The good news is that the fence is there to decrease traffic passing through CCM, not to keep our residents out! You may already have a key to the gate that leads to “Southview Park.” If you were given a key to the sliding door leading from the pool room to the patio, that key also fits the gate. If you want a key and weren’t given one when you moved in, just ask Stacey and she will get you one. Be sure to lock the gate after passing through (in either direction). Now it’s time to go out and enjoy that game of tennis or “walk in the park!”
A traveler in the desert, meeting three nomads about to consume some camel’s milk, asks whether they would share it with him for a price. They agree and pool the milk, the first contributing one pint more than the second, and the second contributing one pint more than the third. They share the milk equally. On leaving, the traveler gives them a sum of money. After some calculation, they decide that the first nomad should equitably get twice as much money as the second nomad. How much should the third nomad get?
The Garden
Come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses...
For the Garden of Daily Living, plant three rows of Peas:
Peace of mind
Peace of heart
Peace of soul
Plant four rows of Squash:
Squash gossip
Squash indifference
Squash grumbling
Squash selfishness
Plant four rows of Lettuce:
Lettuce be faithful
Lettuce be kind
Lettuce be patient
Lettuce really love one another
No Garden is without Turnips:
Turnip for meetings
Turnip for service
Turnip to help one another
To conclude our Garden we must have Thyme:
Thyme for each other
Thyme for family
Thyme for friends
Water freely with patience and cultivate with love. There is much fruit in your Garden because you reap what you sow.
West St. Paul Fire Department officials were visiting Country Club Manor a couple weeks ago and, although they had no other complaints, they did point out that someone had a grill stored on a balcony, albeit a ground floor balcony. They told me that it is a violation of fire codes to have any kind of grill on any balcony. I protested that, unlike most apartment buildings, our balconies are made of concrete and have steel railings. They said that didn’t matter! They asked me to remind everyone that grills are not permitted on balconies which I have now done.
However, we have a nice grill just outside the pool room. I had the opportunity to enjoy lunch out on that patio recently and, on a nice summer’s day, life doesn’t get much better! (I watched a golfer slice his drive thinking he was probably wishing he was enjoying himself on the patio like I was . . . while I was wishing I could be torturing myself on the tee.) If you don’t have a key for that door, you can get one from the office (but please be sure the pool door is locked when you are finished). Also, we would like to install a larger, nicer stainless steel grill there in the near future. Stay tuned.
Don’t forget to sign up for the July 8th picnic at Country Club Manor. Sign up sheets are located in the lobbies. L & M Management will provide the meat, buns, beverages, condiments, plates, cups, napkins and silverware. Please bring a dish to share with your neighbors. Feel free to invite your family and friends! We’ll start at 5:00 PM. Party will be held on the pool patio and in the party room.
Be honest. When you first heard the words “energy crisis,” did you think of Arab oil embargoes or yourself?
If you thought of yourself - struggling to start your inner engine in the morning, desperate to keep it humming after lunch in the afternoon, and only too willing to let it sputter to a stop in the evening - you are not alone.
Everyone, at one time or another, feels fatigued. And who wouldn’t like to have more energy than they now have?
Unfortunately, having more energy is a lot like having more money - it’s easier to talk about it than to get it. Yet it’s also easier to increase your energy than you probably realize. Of course, the broad prescription from doctors is still the same: Get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet, and exercise. But here physicians and other authorities on fatigue go beyond these generalities and offer more specific, high-octane suggestions. So, ladies and gentlemen, please start your engines.
WARM UP. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes in the morning before you start your day. This way you don’t start off feeling rushed and tired.
EAT A THREE-PIECE BREAKFAST. The three components of a good breakfast are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Of course, you don’t want to add fat to your breakfast table. You will get plenty of fats, a good form of storable energy, in the proteins you eat.
But even cereal with milk can get your day off to a good start. Wheat toast and muffins are also good complex carbohydrate options. For protein, you might want to consider low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese.
KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING. If you don’t, you will probably be too tired to get there. Take time each morning to set specific goals for the day. Determine what you want to do; don’t let the routine control you.
ARREST THE ENERGY ROBBERS. If it’s a problem on the job, or if it’s a family feud, you’ve got to resolve it. But if you can’t resolve your problem, at least take a vacation from the situation.
TURN OFF TO TURN ON. Television is famous - make that infamous - for lulling human beings into lethargy. Try reading instead.
WORK OUT TO REV UP. Exercise actually gives you energy. Study after study supports those words. Doctors recommend giving yourself a dose of energetic exercise - brisk walking is enough - three to five times a week for 20 to 30 minutes each time and no later than two hours before bedtime.
TACKLE ONE THING AT A TIME. Make lists. Many times, people feel fatigued because they think they have so much to do and they don’t know where to start. By setting priorities and charting your progress as you make your way through the list, you can remain focused and energetic.
TAKE ONE A DAY. If you are guilty of missing meals, dieting, or not eating properly, taking one multivitamin and mineral supplement a day is a good idea. A lack of good nutrition can cause fatigue, and a supplement can help make up for the missing nutrients.
PUT OUT THE FIRE. Doctors always advise giving up smoking, but add this to the list of reasons: Smoking adversely affects the delivery of oxygen to tissues. The result is fatigue. When you first quit, however, don’t expect an immediate energy boost. Nicotine acts as a stimulant, and withdrawal may cause some temporary tiredness.
GET FEWER ZZZZZZs. You can get too much of a good thing, even sleep. If you oversleep, you tend to be groggy all day. Usually 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night is enough for most people.
GET 20 WINKS. Naps aren’t for everybody, but they might help recharge older people who aren’t sleeping as soundly as they used to. Younger people with very hectic schedules and short nights also might consider taking naps. If you do decide to take naps, try to take them at the same time each day and for no more than an hour.
DRINK UP. Not booze but water. The day before you’re going to be out in the hot sun and physically active, doctors advise that you drink plenty of water and continue to do so on the day of the activity. This will guard against dehydration, which in turn can cause fatigue.
An even dozen of our CCM residents attended the
opening session of our regular aquatics program held on Saturday mornings at 10
and 11 a.m. (including July 3). There is no charge. Come on down
and visit your neighbor while loosing a pound or two! All are welcome.

The nomads contributed 5, 4 and 3 pints. Sharing the 12 pints among four people gives each of them 3 pints. The third nomad therefore drank his entire contribution, and so should get paid nothing.
